ROADTREK
UPDATE (April 23, 2008)
from Jeff Hanemaayer - Chairman, Roadtrek Inc.
Roadtrek
Sales are Alive and Well
Overall retail RV sales are down or flat in many parts
of country. But guess how Roadtrek retail sales are doing? They’re
doing just great. For the first quarter,
Roadtrek retail deliveries matched last year’s record pace.
This is better than it looks when you consider that Sprinter inventory
is still being built up with our RS and SS models on the recently
introduced completely redesigned Sprinter vans. In fact, retail
deliveries of our Chevy based models were up 10%!
Why are Roadtreks selling at their best pace ever? Many
reasons, both short term and long:
-
High fuel prices favor class B’s over other segments of the
industry, especially Sprinter based models. (Over time, as more
households opt for lighter more fuel efficient vehicles for their
daily transportation, fewer large pickups and SUVs will be in the
driveway ready to haul large towables.)
-
In less than two years we made major design changes or complete
redesigns to 6 of our 7 models.
-
70% of our buyers are over 60 years of age. Mature buyers
are least affected by economic turmoil and stricter finance company
criteria.
-
Baby boomers are just starting to enter their 60s. Roadtreks
should enjoy above average growth until the average boomer is 62
around 2017. The last boomers won’t hit this peak buying age
until 2026.
-
People are living longer and wanting to stay active
later in life. Many RVers who want to RV for as long as they possibly
can end up in a class B since they’re the easiest RV for them
to drive, park and handle.
-
The age distribution of our buyers is “stretching”
at both ends of the range. As people live longer, we are getting
a larger portion of buyers over 70. But at the same time, more young
buyers are buying Roadtreks instead of minivans, large SUVs, conversion
vans and other RVs.
-
The vast majority of families have two kids or less. They are also
taking shorter more frequent vacations and weekend getaways. A Roadtrek
that sleeps four sitting in the driveway (that can be used as a
second car) makes more sense than a large motorhome or travel trailer
sitting in storage.
But how are class B's in general doing? According
to statistics from the U.S. RV Industry Association, class B shipments
hit their highest levels this millennium (on a seasonally adjusted
basis) in late 2006 and early 2007 as the popularity of Sprinter-based
models peaked. This was followed by a decline in the last half of
2007 as manufacturers, including Roadtrek ran out of the "old"
style Sprinter vans well before the new style became available in
volume in North America. While no longer declining, shipment levels
on a seasonally adjusted basis have not increased because most manufacturers
have not started shipping new style Sprinter based models in volume.
Roadtrek is the only
manufacturer doing so and enjoying sales growth and growing
market share as a result.
